Ronda Just Changed the Game for Microbrands —
And Here's Why It Matters
There's a name that doesn't get nearly enough credit in microbrand circles: Ronda. You know them for quartz. Most people do. But this month, they made a move that every independent watch brand, and their customers, should pay close attention to.
For decades, Ronda's Swiss-made quartz calibers have quietly powered everything from entry-level fashion watches to serious tool pieces, reliably, affordably, and without fanfare. But now they've launched the Caliber R01, a brand-new Swiss-made automatic movement, and it's not just another tick in the box.

Ronda's R150 Mecano — the predecessor that put Swiss automatic credibility in microbrand hands. The R01 is a full clean-sheet redesign.
A Fresh Start, Not an Upgrade
The R01 isn't a revision of the older R150 Mecano. It's a clean-sheet design. Ronda describes it as their "fresh start" for mechanicals, and the specs back that up.
At the core is something that sets this movement apart from the usual suspects in the microbrand space: a silicon escapement. That means the escape wheel and pallet fork, the components that take the most wear in any mechanical movement, are made from silicon rather than traditional metal.
In plain English: your watch runs better for longer, with less servicing. Ronda's own press material is refreshingly direct — silicon components "greatly reduce the burden on after-sales teams." For a microbrand with a lean operation, that's not a marketing line. It's a genuine design benefit that flows all the way through to the customer.
The Specs Worth Talking About
| Specification | Ronda Caliber R01 |
|---|---|
| Casing Diameter | 28.2mm |
| Height | 4.2mm |
| Jewels | 25 |
| Beat Rate | 25,200 bph / 3.5 Hz |
| Power Reserve | 72+ hours |
| Anti-Magnetic | 200 Gauss (all grades) |
| Escapement | Silicon |
| Grades Available | Elaboré → COSC Excellence |
That last line is the kicker. Ronda is offering the R01 in multiple precision tiers, including grades certified to COSC Excellence standards. COSC certification has long been a selling point associated with watches costing thousands more. Bringing that option to the microbrand supply chain is a genuinely big deal.
Here's the honest conversation: the microbrand world has long relied on the same handful of movements. They're proven, accessible, and beloved for a reason. But they also mean that a lot of great watches beating different drums on the outside are ticking in near-identical ways on the inside.
The R01 opens a different door. Because it's not a drop-in replacement for common cases — at 28.2mm, brands will need to design around it — the watches that adopt it will be built with intention. They'll carry something genuinely different under the dial: a silicon escapement, a higher precision ceiling, and a fresh Swiss pedigree.
For collectors who care about what's inside, that's worth paying attention to.

The movement you spec is increasingly part of the product story — an open caseback with a compelling caliber changes how collectors engage with a piece.
The Caveat — Because We Keep It Real
Worth noting
No movement is perfect, and the R01 is brand new, there are no long-term reliability reports yet, and no microbrands have shipped with it at the time of writing.
Silicon components, while excellent at resisting magnetism, are more vulnerable to impact damage than metal. Ronda acknowledges this directly: "Silicon components are sensitive to shocks and impacts."
If you're a brand considering it for a hardcore field or dive watch, there are questions worth asking. But for a dress piece, a daily wearer, or any watch where accuracy and low-maintenance operation are the priorities? The R01 is exactly the kind of movement you'd want to design around.
Where We Stand
At Seals, we pay close attention to what's happening at the movement level, not just dial design and case finishing. The R01 is a development we'll be watching closely. Whether or not it becomes the next great microbrand workhorse depends on which brands pick it up and what they build with it.
But the technology is real, the credentials are solid, and Ronda has earned their place at the table. A Swiss-made automatic with silicon internals and the option for COSC Excellence certification, available to independent brands // that's not nothing.
We'll be keeping an eye out for the first pieces built around it. And we suspect you will be too.
