A Spark in the Foothills

Picture this: It's 2014, and I'm hunkered down at a local pub in El Dorado Hills, California, napkins scattered like battlefield maps, a cold beer sweating in the summer heat (it's hot as hell in Northern California). What started as idle doodles of armored tanks (a nod to my love for rugged machinery) morphed into the bold outlines of a bezel and case. That night, amid the clink of glasses and hum of conversation, Seals Watch Company was born. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, our microbrand isn't just about telling time, it's about capturing the grit and glory of the outdoors, one limited-edition automatic at a time.

Fast-forward a decade, and we've become a quiet force in American watchmaking: crafting brilliant 3-hand automatics, dive watches, and GMTs that shrug off saltwater dives and mountain scrambles. Our designs draw from the raw beauty of California's coast, like the Dark Seal, inspired by a massive harbor seal I befriended on Catalina Island (frozen fish bribes included; shark-chasing adventures not so much). It's honest work: steel cases forged for durability, movements that hum with reliability, and a commitment to originality that sets us apart in a world of smartwatches and fleeting trends.

The Man Behind the Movement

As founder and lead designer, I've poured years, now a decade, into Seals Watch Co. because watches, to me, are more than accessories, they're companions for our daily adventures, jaunts or mundane meanderings.

A California native (been stuck here forever) with a degree from California State University, Long Beach, I cut my teeth in entrepreneurship and product design, blending technical precision with creative fire. In 2016, I secured U.S. Design Patent USD781723S1 for our innovative wristwatch case – a sleek, integrated steel sport design that's as tough as the trails and board rooms it was created for.

But the real catalyst? The arrival of my firstborn daughter. As Cool Hunting so aptly put it, that life-changing moment lit a fuse: I wanted to build something honest and creative, a legacy of quality craftsmanship that stands the test of time (and tantrums). Today, from our El Dorado Hills workshop, I lead a small team obsessed with details, glacis-inspired cases, sapphire crystals that laugh at scratches, and straps that age like a well-worn leather jacket. We've earned raves from aBlogtoWatch ("a microbrand punching way above its weight") and WatchTime ("field explorers built for the backcountry"), proving that great design doesn't need a Swiss passport, just a relentless drive and a California sunset.

Beyond the bench, I'm all about giving back. As co-founder of the Sacramento M's, a summer collegiate baseball club (retired), I'm passionate about spotlighting homegrown talent in a fun, family-friendly arena. It's my way of fostering community, much like how Seals watches bring people together around shared adventures, whether it's a coastal dive or a trek through the Sierras.
